With FIFA holding such an extreme position of importance within the footballing ecosystem, associations have come to be at the mercy of the organisation, without whose support and backing, the associations are left in a state of isolation.
The sporting world has seen various instances wherein Athletes have resorted to the use of performance enhancing drugs in a bid to achieve an edge over their competitors. Using drugs or other processes for performance enhancement is justly considered to be unethical, considering that it essentially distorts the spirit of sports. This deliberate use of a substance or a process/method, banned by the medical commission of the World Anti-Doping Agency (‘WADA’) is what amounts to doping, and it is one of the most serious issues plaguing the field of sports in the modern day.
14 Sports Law is the first highly specialised sports law boutique based in Portugal, focusing on all things legal in the world of sports. Their work includes international and national dispute resolution before sports’ arbitration bodies, advising on compliance, disciplinary, contractual and regulatory matters, as well as assisting investors in the business of sports.
We feel glad to announce that Sports Law and Policy Review Reporter (SLPRR) is this year’s Knowledge Partner for the National Legal Article Writing Competition, 2022, organised by the Students for the Promotion of International Law, Government Law College, Mumbai (SPIL).
The game of rugby, also referred to as football in many parts of the world, is facing an existential threat because of its level of physicality and risks associated with long-term health of players. The dark side of this sport was revealed in a match between Pittsburgh Steelers’ and Cincinnati Bengals in 2019, played in the US National Football League (“NFL”). After suffering questionable hits over their heads, players critically suffered from concussions and brain injuries that resulted in them being stretched off the field. Based on scientific evidence, researchers have concluded that repeated hits to head i.e., suffering from repeated concussions results in early on-set dementia and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (“CTE”), a degenerative brain condition that causes irreparable and incurable damage to the brain.

With the proliferation of international sports, sporting events have become an attractive medium of expressing messages on global as well as domestic issues. Governments can be actively seen using sports as a policy instrument to either promote their own ideologies and political orientations or to condemn those of some other countries. Confrontational use of politics in sports is not uncommon, as also evidenced by numerous instances which have been discussed in this article.
We are elated to introduce 'EXPLAINERS', an addition to the 'ASK SLPRR PROJECT.' This initiative was born in order to eliminate the gatekeeping of legal awareness in sport by making relevant laws more accessible to non-legal minds. Through a series of 'EXPLAINERS', we hope to deconstruct different legal aspects of sport, and reach various stakeholders in the industry.
Last year, the news of Indian shuttler PV Sindhu being the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals for the country was flooding the social media and news channels. While the whole country was celebrating the win, simultaneously the headline “PV Sindhu takes 20 brands to court for using her name and image without permission” was being circulated. This sparked a much-needed discussion in the Indian Sports Law community about Personality Rights of Athletes in India.
